Mahshid Farhoudi - Tulips in Orange
Mahshid Farhoudi – "Tulips in Orange"

"I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine…
Oberon, A Midsummer’s Night Dream"

Playwright William Shakespeare may have been the master of floral imagery. Hamlet’s Ophelia, for example, used flowers to symbolize her grief, Juliet her love for Romeo and the Princess Perdita wished for violets, daffodils, and primroses to make garlands for her friends in The Winter’s Tale.

The ancient language of flowers – floriography – survives to this day and will be the theme of a lush group show that explores the poetry behind the posies.

This group will feature some of Canada’s most intriguing floriographers including: Barbara Gamble, Don McVeigh, Kathy M. Haycock, Mahshid Farhoudi, Paul Schibli, Paula Zoubek, Pina Manoni-Rennick, John Ceprano, Katrin Smith, Susan Porter, and introducing Ruth Dick
