Varley Art Gallery of Markham presents one of the first exhibitions dedicated to exploring Canada’s second major post-war avant-garde movement

MARKHAM, ON ~ May 22, 2013 ~ The Varley Art Gallery of Markham is pleased to present The Plasticiens and Beyond: Montreal, 1955-1970. All are welcome to celebrate the opening of this exciting exhibition with curator and renowned contemporary art historian Roald Nasgaard in attendance.

This exhibition, which highlights Canada’s second post-war avant-garde movement, is a sequel to The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal 1941 – 1960, an exhibition that was presented at the Varley Art Gallery in 2009.

About The Plasticiens

This exhibition, which is co-produced by the Varley Art Gallery of Markham and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec was initiated by Roald Nasgaard, and co-curated by Roald Nasgaard and Michel Martin, opens on May 25 and will remain at the Varley Art Galley until September 2, 2013.

Dave Douglas and Friends in Partnership with the Markham Jazz Festival

Sunday, August 18, 2013 | 6 p.m.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Montreal and New York were in the forefront of modernist developments in both music and visual arts. Joined by Juno nominee Hugh Marsh, two-time Grammy nominee and New York-based trumpeter, Dave Douglas performs dynamic, original jazz compositions inspired by the exhibition.
