Hangman Art Gallery Announces “The Male Gayz”
June 6 , 2013 (TORONTO):Hangman Art Gallery presents The Male Gayz. Photographs by Russell Brohier. New works of black and white photography exploring the male figure. Base on the traditional concept of the gaze from various perspectives in art, this show examines this dynamic with the male as subject. Photographed from the male perspective, a male viewing and capturing the image of another male. Hence the "gayz" is a reference to the dynamic and subtle dialectic of power between two males.
The question then remains, is this an equation of power? The male to male gaze and the possibility of an exchange of desire. The objectivization is both in the act of viewing but also in the act of creating the heroic persona. The tension which could be sexual but may often be also the base struggle of dominance. Is it really all in the eyes?
