June 10 – 16
Tyler Rollins Fine Art is pleased to participate in the VOLTA art fair in Basel, Switzerland from June 10 – 16. Our booth (no. C-4) will feature recent works in a variety of media by two artists represented by the gallery, Patricia Eustaquio and Sopheap Pich.
Born in 1977 and based in Manila, Patricia Eustaquio is one of the leading Filipino artists of her generation. Informed by the vocabulary of craft and design, her work explores the vanity of artistic and cultural constructs, referencing the histories and processes related to different materials. She is noted for her large, ornately shaped canvases on which she paints magnified details from Old Master still life paintings, sometimes focusing on haunting imagery such as dead birds and butchered meat. Her sculptural work explores the expressive possibilities of humble materials such as lace, felt, and cardboard, bringing to them an unexpected monumentality. Her first solo exhibition in the United States will take place at our gallery in New York from September 12 – October 19, 2013. She will present paintings and sculptures that are part of a new body of work developed for her upcoming solo exhibition at the Jorge B. Vargas Museum in Manila (July 23 – August 24, 2013).
Sopheap Pich works primarily with thin strips of rattan and bamboo to create sculptural forms that address issues of time, memory, and the body, often relating to Cambodia’s history, particularly with regard to his recollections of life during the Khmer Rouge period (1975-79), and its culture, both its ancient traditions and contemporary struggles. Pich’s work is currently featured in a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, entitled Cambodian Rattan: The Sculptures of Sopheap Pich (through July 7), as well as a solo exhibition at Tyler Rollins Fine Art (through June 14). He will be a participating artist in the upcoming Moscow Biennial, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art will present a solo exhibition of his work, opening in February 2014. Pich has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including MASS MoCA (2012), the Henry Art Gallery (2011-12), the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco (2011), and the Singapore Art Museum (2010). Pich was a featured artist in Documenta (13) in Germany (2012), the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale in Japan (2009), the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Australia (2009), the Singapore Biennale (2011), and the Asian Art Biennial in Taiwan (2011).
