HARMONICS

September 21 – October 20, 2013

Reception, artist in attendance:

Sunday, September 22, 2 – 5 pm

Lonsdale Gallery presents Harmonics, a solo exhibition by leading Canadian abstractionist Pedie Wolfond. In 2011, Wolfond was honoured with a museum survey exhibition titled Lumen at the MacDonald Stewart Art Center. This fall 2013, Lonsdale Gallery presents her latest series which features large-scale kaleidoscopic paintings awash with colour, several of which are hung as diamonds. Acrylic washes overlay raw canvas, emanating light with the transformative radiance of stained glass.

Pedie Wolfond’s recent paintings are the exuberant offspring of Abstract Expressionism and Colourfield painting. Renowned curator and art historian Tom Smart argues that while Wolfond’s practice is indebted to these seminal movements in the history of modern art, her paintings amplify the indomitable energy of this aesthetic, "its nuances and elasticity, rigidities and miraculous capacity to elevate viewers to entirely different states of consciousness."

Tom Smart’s interest in Wolfond’s career is explored in depth though the keystone essay in the publication accompanying Harmonics. This exhibition catalogue will include an introduction by Leia Gore, in conversation with ethnomusicologist and performance pianist Josie Zocco.

Don’t miss this high-energy exhibition of large-scale masterworks. Wolfond’s newest paintings embody the signature transcendental universalism that established abstract expressionism as the most influential painting movement of our age.

"Her trademark lozenges are arranged in interlocked patterns which seem to obey a central spiraling or torqueing movement-which satisfactorily suggests the festive revolving or a carousel,"writes Gary Michel Dault. "Clearly, whether it evinces a place, a mood, a movement, or a centripetal rush towards inwardness and mediation, Pedie Wolfond’s use of colour feels innate, childlike, unpremeditated, jubilant and enriching."

Lonsdale Gallery is participating in the Canadian Art Gallery Hop. Harmonics will be on view the day of the Hop, September 21, 2013 from 11 – 5, with the opening reception following taking place from 2 – 5 pm the following day, Sunday the 22nd.

Wolfond’s new paintings will be exhibited by Lonsdale Gallery at Art Toronto, Booth 1114, and AQUA Miami, Room 104.
