Bold geometric forms are imbedded in big chunks of colour with lush underpainting in the art practice of David Urban. He builds his paintings, layer upon layer, into strange borderlands between abstraction and representation. His rhythmic and colliding brushstrokes conjure up the sounds of musical instruments the primacy of a child’s imagination.Deeply implicated in the history and methodology of paint, he is a student of literature and music. His use of paint is akin to a poet’s use of words or a musician’s use of notes. He investigates the physical presence of sound in paint, exploring the interplay between representation and abstraction, while maintaining a strong rhythmical structure.
