Opening Reception at Bau-Xi Gallery Toronto: Saturday, December 7th 2-4 pm, main floor, artist in attendance

From the hiding-place of the Armoire, Darlene Cole’s new paintings examine the degrees of intimacy between us. Her willingness to take risks conceptually as well as her complex layers of oil paint create a push and pull that makes for captivating viewing.

In Gaston Bachelard’s, The Poetics of Space, he describes, “wardrobes with their shelves…are veritable organs of the secret psychological life.” As Cole recently paints in a century-old house that she remembers as a child, she maintains the sense of childhood that so poetically informs her work.

Darlene Cole has become one of the most sought after artists in Canada. Her paintings have appeared in numerous exhibitions throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in corporate and private collections around the world. More…

Arrangement – Blue, Green, acrylic on canvas, 48 x 48 inches, $5100 CAD

Opening Reception at Bau-Xi Gallery Toronto: Saturday, December 7th 2-4 pm, upper gallery.

Gordon Wiens’ exhibition at Bau-Xi Toronto will be a continuation of his series Form and Formlessness. This body of work provides an alternative to the intense experience of modern day living through its subdued colour palette, textual elements and ordered forms. These contemplative paintings allow the viewer the opportunity to find balance and perspective.

The viewer recognizes the geometric strips layered upon one another, iconic of Wiens’ style, however in this latest series, flecks of bright pink and fresh greens emerge through the many bands of whites and greys. The process is both intricate and highly detailed, with careful attention paid to where each form is placed, yet it is also a meditative and tranquil one, describes Wiens.

“I am inspired by the processes of nature more than nature itself. It is the essence of this that is evident in my work, visible in the co-existence of form and formlessness in each piece.” More…

Bau-Xi Gallery is thrilled to welcome Toronto-based artist, Shaun Downey, to their stable of artists.

Shaun Downey strives to breathe fresh life into realist painting by combining classical ideals within the context of his own life and surroundings. His paintings have elements of decades past, but are firmly grounded in present day. Often painting his wife and friends within the confines of his home, we are allowed a voyeuristic glance into his world as he reveals his efforts to capture the fleeting beauty of modern life.

As outside viewers, we find ourselves longing to understand who Shaun Downey’s subjects are. What their lives are like, and which chain of events led them to the exact moment the artist has captured. His meticulously rendered paintings call out to be understood, but we the viewer are left to make our own assumptions. Downey’s work was shown in 2010 at the National Portrait Gallery in London, as part of the BP Portrait Award, and his work can be found in numerous public and private collections. More…
