An Opening Exhibition
1 February – 1 March
The_View_From_Tite_Street.2ce68b1.jpg John Martin Chelsea opens today with Vernissage, an exhibition evoking the spirit of London’s first great art district with works by Whistler, Walter Greaves, Paul Maitland and Theodore Roussel. Of the 1300 artist studios that fringed the Thames, the most famous of all, Whistler’s Tite Street studio – imagined by Barry McGlashan – becomes the starting point for a series of specially commissioned contemporary works inspired by Chelsea. Richard Cartwright and Makiko Nakamura set off in pursuit of the crepuscular light of Whistler’s Noctures while Andrew Gifford sheltering under Vauxhall Bridge during the wettest January on record, finished a stunning series of delicate Thames evening studies. Colin Watson and Genaddii Gogoliuk take inspiration from Rossetti, John Caple invokes the liberated spirit of the surrealist painter, Leonora Carrington, Rupert Gatfield entwines the Borough’s battling mascots and Chelsea Girl by Neale Howells, captures the defiance of the King’s Road’s sporadic counter-cultures. With work by Leon Morrocco, Josh Dorman, Rory Carnegie, Margaret Corcoran, Martin Finnin, Olivia Musgrave, and Mark Adlington we look forward to welcoming you to the new gallery very soon.

… back in Mayfair,

Westminster Council have published an important consultation paper to protect galleries in Mayfair and ensure the district’s reputation as one of the world’s most vibrant art markets. There are now over 90 galleries in and around Bond Street providing exhibitions and expertise, from antiquities to contemporary art, but with growing demand from fashion labels for space many are likely to close within the next few years. If you want to keep galleries in Mayfair please write to the Council before 14th February. A simple line of support will make a huge difference to their decision (particularly if you live outside the UK). Thank you.
