Manif d’art takes part in Art Souterrain

Quebec City, Wednesday, February 19, 2014 – From March 1 to March 16, Manif d’art will be presenting an installation by artist Jacques Samson as part of the 6th edition of the Art Souterrain festival in Montreal. It is the first collaboration between the two events.

The work Vectors and Branches will be exhibited at Complexe Guy-Favreau. It will be part of a large itinerary bringing together more than 100 works on the theme of rootedness.

The installation is made of two series that call out to each other. The Vectors are sculptural forms set on pedestals so that black holes seem oddly generated by some gravitational force. The Branches, smaller in size, are wall-mounted structures made of a smooth, black, flowing material, rubber, which opposes to the most impressive objects flowing shapes with multiple evocations: branches, runoff veins, nerve endings. In both construction methods, the form is deployed according to the character of the material and the artist’s insatiable desire to explore all possibilities.

Jacques Samson has been living and working in the Saint-Roch neighbourhood of Quebec City since 1995. He has pursued a Master’s degree in Visual Arts at Laval University. Since his beginnings, he has been involved with the artistic community in Quebec City.

ART SOUTERRAIN was founded in 2009 and each year showcases international contemporary art institutions, artists, and the architectural and cultural heritage of downtown Montreal’s underground city. As a unique contemporary art festival in North America, ART SOUTERRAIN aims to make art accessible to a wider audience by taking it out of its traditional exhibition spaces.

Major biennial of contemporary art on the Canadian scene, Manif d’art – the Quebec city Biennial presents the work of nearly 100 artists originating from every horizon. Each edition comprises exhibits and a multitude of activities based around a central theme exclusive to that edition of the event. Over 30 cultural organizations help make this international festival an integral aspect of the Quebec City art scene. The 7th edition will be held from May 3 to June 1, 2014, and be on the theme of resistance.
