Pete Smith: Generation Four
February 27 – March 29, 2014

Opening Thursday February 27, 6-9 pm

Botanica One
p|m Gallery is pleased to present new paintings and works on paper by Pete Smith.

Smith’s newest paintings enjoy a certain duality in that they occupy an actual, physical space but they also inhabit a metaphoric one. The source images that they are based upon are more found than drawn. They are reconfigured and invented by the machine and discovered by Smith – cropped, reconfigured, and given a material specificity.

Four years ago, Pete Smith made a dynamic animation that remixed his previous five years of work. The paintings Smith has made since are based upon individual frames selected from a 5 minute animation (approximately 4387 still frames). The early works in this series were based upon entire frames; the newest body of work is based upon fragments. By working with fragments of still frames Smith has entered into a realm of infinite variations, when one element is explored new ones are uncovered.

The artist will be in attendance at the opening. If we’re lucky he’ll DJ. And if you’re REALLY lucky, he might let you DJ.

OPEN: Wednesday – Saturday 12 – 5:30pm
VISIT: 1518 Dundas Street West, Toronto
