Judy Chicago, Picasso, and Steven Naifeh exhibitions open for Spring season

Nyehaus is proud to present The Very Best of Judy Chicago at Mana Contemporary. One of the select nationwide exhibitions and events celebrating the artist’s 75th birthday, this major survey of key works from Chicago’s career includes her early output as well as many significant and monumental artworks that will be new to East Coast audiences.

According to Nyehaus founder Tim Nye “Language is an evolutionary process and Chicago has compressed the history of art, her history of art, into 50 years of an evolving language.” Mana Contemporary co-founder Eugene Lemay said “Mana is thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase this extraordinary American legend.”

The exhibition includes test plates and drawings from her most well-known opus, The Dinner Party (permanently housed at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum), as well as the 32-foot-long Prismacolor drawing In the Beginning which reinterprets Genesis and places women at the center of birth and creation. The inspiring Rainbow Shabbat, a large-stained glass window presenting a hopeful vision of the future, which was the culminating work in the Holocaust Project: From Darkness into Light, will also be on view.

New to most viewers will be Atmospheres, a series of fireworks pieces that Chicago created in southern California between 1968-1974. In 2012, as part of the “Getty Performance Festival,” she picked up where she left off in order to present two major pyrotechnical works along with a new dry ice piece titled Sublime Environment. These innovative performances are collected in a limited edition suite titled “Judy Chicago” On Fire,” published by Nyehaus.

The exhibition at Mana Contemporary will complement the Brooklyn Museum’s “Chicago in L.A: Judy Chicago, 1962-1974,” opening on April 4, 2014. Mana Contemporary will also host a special event on April 12 with Judy Chicago in dialogue with Jeffrey Deitch, former director of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. A reception and party to celebrate Ms. Chicago’s 75th birthday featuring a cake designed by the artist will follow the conversation.

Mana Contemporary, in collaboration with Barcelona gallery Sala Gaspar, presents Pablo Picasso: La Tauromaquia, on view from March 7 to August 1, 2014. The rare exhibition of all 26 of Picasso’s La Tauromaquia etchings also includes an original ink drawing never before seen in public that Picasso dedicated to Miguel Gaspar on the cover of the book.

In 1957, the Barcelona-based publishing house Gustavo Gili commissioned Pablo Picasso to illustrate the 18th-century book La Tauromaquia o arte de torear (“Tauromachy or the Art of Bullfighting”), by José Delgado, known colloquially as “Pepe Illo.” In the span of a few weeks that summer, Picasso etched 26 plates for the book, each depicting different moments in the bullfight. Picasso created this portfolio with a technique that was unusual for him, the sugar-lift aquatint, which allowed him to paint directly on the copper plates with a brush. His use of this process proved incredibly successful, evoking the tension, action, and choreography of the bullring through suggestive shapes and lines.

The Middle East Center for the Arts (MECA), in collaboration with Leila Heller Gallery, presents an alluring exhibition of geometrically abstract paintings and sculpture by Steven Naifeh, on view from March 7 to August 1, 2014. The son of American diplomats, Naifeh spent his childhood surrounded by the rich motifs and geometric patterns of diverse societies across the Arab and Islamic world. This unique upbringing, combined with deep scholarly knowledge and appreciation for the history of Western abstraction, has resulted in an immersive body of work that delights in its precise mathematical alignments of color, shape, and line. The first solo show by an American artist at MECA, Naifeh’s exhibition synergizes the traditions of East and West, resulting in a rich body of work that is both timeless and contemporary, distant and familiar. The show is complemented by an exhibit at Leila Heller Gallery from March 27-April 26, 2014.

Mana Contemporary presents Eugene Lemay: Strata, an installation of six works that provide an immersive visual experience. Upon entering the 5,000-square-foot gallery, viewers are presented with Lemay’s monolithic digital prints on canvas–the largest being 50 feet wide. Grid-like patterns of black-gray tones resonate with a meditative aesthetic. Closer inspection reveals imperceptible layers of handwritten letters distinguished by subtle variation in color, an ongoing narrative in Lemay’s work. On view through April 18, 2014.

The premier art dealer of Photorealism, who coined that term in 1969, Louis K. Meisel has spent the past forty years amassing an illustrious collection of startlingly realistic paintings. Photorealism Revisited: Works from the Louis K. Meisel Gallery, Bernaducci Meisel Gallery, and Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation Collections features approximately sixty works from some of the most well known Photorealist artists. Photorealism—the first modern movement to assert reliance on photography as a crucial part of the artistic process—has been an influential force on the art scene since the late 1960s.
