a break with the outside world entails a break with the inside world…
what interests me is what lies beyond the outside-inside…
No Ground But Say Ground is a line from Samuel Beckett’s short prose piece, Worstward Ho. The exhibition was conceived in response to the recent publication of the writer’s letters where it was revealed he enjoyed working in the garden when visiting his house in the French countryside. The idea of the writer digging in the ground seemed fitting as he was known for digging into language, making the reading of it a visceral experience. Artists were chosen for the exhibition that in some way worked with the ground of the picture that way that Beckett dug in the ground of the earth and in his writing, turning it over, rooting it out. Like the author’s move from garden to typewriter, this group re-enters the studio space to turn over the ground of the picture – not to discover any interior space but to confront and pervert the outside.
