Second Nature

Abstract Art from Maine

Curated by Mark Wethli

Featuring: John Bisbee, Meghan Brady, Clint Fulkeron, Cassie Jones, Joe Kievitt, and Andrea Sulzer

March 7 – April 19, 2014

The Curator Gallery is pleased to present its debut exhibition, Second Nature: Abstract Art From Maine. Curated by Mark Wethli, this group show features six artists from the Maine cities of Portland, Brunswick, and Camden. The exhibit opens to the public on Friday, March 7 and runs through Saturday, April 19.

Mark Wethli, the first Guest Curator, is a painter from Brunswick. He is the A. LeRoy Greason Professor of Art at Bowdoin College, where he previously served as the Chair of the Visual Art Department.

While the state of Maine has a long-standing reputation as a destination for landscape painters, this exhibition is, as Mark Wethli puts it, “about Maine’s ‘second nature’ – abstract artists whose work is inspired by natural processes rather than outward appearances.” John Bisbee and Clint Fulkerson, for example, find inspiration for their work in the structure of natural processes. Meghan Brady and Andrea Sulzer use the chaotic energy of the natural world as a starting point for their artistic processes. Cassie Jones and Joe Kievitt find new ways to translate existing cultural representations of nature.

The Curator Gallery is a fine art gallery located at the entrance to the High Line on 23rd Street. Collaborating with guest curators, the Gallery exhibits works on paper, painting, photography and sculpture by emerging and mid-career artists in solo and group shows. Founded and underwritten by Ann S. Moore, the retired Chairman and CEO of Time Inc., the Gallery’s mission is to bring exposure to hardworking artists, as well as to educate and expand the pool of engaged, serious collectors. Lectures for private parties on how and why to start an art collection are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Two-hour watercolor lessons are available to the public on Sundays at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. Information on how to sign up is available at our website.
